Mini dictionary HU–EN–DE: fleet vocabulary in three languages

At internationally owned companies, fleet matters run in two or three languages: the Hungarian insurance reality has to be reported in English or German. This mini dictionary gives you reliable vocabulary for that – in table form, with notes on misleading literal translations. The English and German mirror versions of the site are available from the language switcher in the header.

In brief:
  • 24 key terms in three languages, in table form – the vocabulary for fleet reports and discussions with the parent company.
  • The notes flag false friends: not every word translates literally.
  • The Hungarian explanation of each term lives in the Glossary A–Z article.

Notes on false friends

A few warnings against literal translation. The Hungarian term casco isn't self-explanatory in an international setting: in English it's best described as “own-damage cover” or “comprehensive/casco cover”, while in German the standard approach is the Voll- and Teilkasko distinction. The English equivalent of kgfb is MTPL – the everyday British usage “third party insurance” is broader. Kárhányad is the loss ratio – not “damage rate”. Önrész can be either deductible (US) or excess (UK) in English – for a report, it's worth matching whichever term the parent company uses. If you're unsure, the exact content of the Hungarian term is set out in the Glossary A–Z article – worth going back to before translating.

Reporting tip: how to reference Hungarian specifics

A recurring difficulty in parent-company reporting is explaining Hungarian specifics. A proven approach is a short footnote formula: name the Hungarian term, give the closest international equivalent, and add one sentence on how they differ – for example, next to the MTPL equivalent for kgfb, noting that the details of the Hungarian system (published tariffs, fleet administration) are locally regulated. The mini dictionary's pairs are built for exactly this formula. If your report includes sums insured or premiums, clearly marking the currency and the period deserves particular attention. On request, I also provide a skeleton template for the insurance section of fleet reports – in two languages, matched to your parent company's terminology.
